Born: May 7, 1923 in Krefeld, Germany. Son of Grammar school teacher with Ph.D. in psychology; grandson of Lutheran minister. Present family status: married with Ursula Elisabeth Reich, née Pleines (since 1958); two children, four grandchildren. University studies (1946-1955): Physics and Electrical Engineering (doctor degrees in each) at the universities of Köln (Cologne), Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle), Braunschweig (Brunswick), Paris (France), and Nottingham (UK). From 1984: Various social science topics, mainly at Fribourg University and the Geneva Piaget Archives (summer schools). 2004: Dr. theol. (psychology of religion, University of Utrecht) Positions as Research Fellow (in physics): Harvard University (1955), Brookhaven National Laboratory, L.I., N.Y. (1965/1966), Dortmund University, FRG (1983); Tokyo State University [Todai] (1984). Position as (senior) scientist (applied physics): European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN), Geneva (Switzerland), 1955 - 1983. 1984-2004: (Senior) Research Fellow (Wissenschaftlicher Forschungsmitarbeiter) at the Pedagogical Institute of the University of Fribourg University (German branch); on occasion lecturer on the psychology of religion and religious education. Current main research interests: Cognitive development of children, adolescents, and adults, in particular in the religious domain; thought forms other than Piagetian operations, in particular relational and contextual (complementarist) reasoning (RCR); religious development in general; relations between science and religion; relations between neurobiology and religion. Social science publications: Author of a monograph on Relational and Contextual Reasoning, co-author of a volume on the development of children's and young people's world-views. Co-editor of five edited volumes (four on religious development, one on relational and contextual reasoning in various domains - four in German, one in English); (co-)author of some 20 chapters in various books and of dozens of articles (see separate list). Honours and awards: Consulting Editor, The International Journal for the Psychology of Religion; Award by the John Templeton Foundation for an article in humility theology, 1995; William James Award (Division 36, American Psychological Association) for contributions to the psychology of religion, 1997.
